Description

Built in 1955, this rarely seen relic from before the oil industry is the summer retreat of Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the father of today's ruler Sheikh Mohammed. This two-story building is constructed out of gypsum and coral and is topped with a roof of palm fronds. The wooden window shutters were carved from East African timber, and the majlis (reception room) is decorated with items such as rifles, daggers, coffee pots, radios, and clocks that give a look into the royal lifestyle. The palm garden has a traditional falaj irrigation system.
